Acupuncture in Podiatry
In 2000, I was commissioned by Southwark NHS Foot Health department to develop a training programme for their staff. This was the first acupuncture training in the UK to serve specifically the needs of podiatrists. The course was validated by the Society of Chiropodists & Podiatrists, and ran annually for a decade. All of the clinical podiatrists in Southwark were trained, and used acupuncture regularly in their work. It became a regular feature in the pain clinic. Acupuncture was used similarly in podiatry departments in other areas, such as Ayrshire & Arran, and Derbyshire County PCT.
Currently this course is being updated to reflect research and developments during the past decade. As before, it will offer a comprehensive introduction to the safe clinical use of acupuncture in podiatry, drawing on the evidence base, physiological principles, trigger points, and insights from the Chinese traditional approach.
I am happy to discuss training needs with individuals or groups of acupuncturists or podiatrists wanting to develop in this area.
I have extensive experience of teaching acupuncture. In the 1970s I was
co-director of the teaching clinic for the British College of Acupuncture, and
a member of its board of governors. I served as external examiner to the Norwegian School of Traditional Acupuncture. I was Chair of the Education Committee of the British Medical Acupuncture Society and taught on many of its basic and intermediate courses.
